COURSE: Willow basket making

COURSE: Willow basket making

Come and join Catherine Beaumont for a lovely day of willow weaving to make your very own egg basket!

What to Expect:
Using Somerset and locally cut willow in a variety of colours Catherine will guide you in making your very own egg basket - useful not only for eggs but collecting herbs from the garden, a little picnic tea break, blackberry picking, Easter egg hunts or even for throwing confetti from!

This is a day long course that has limited space and everything you need to make the basket will be provided.  This basket is about 30cm across and 14cm high and Catherine will show you different weaving techniques from a simple weave for the side to other techniques that allows you to bring in different colours of willow and of course form the handle.

The ticket price also includes a light lunch and hot and cold refreshments.

About Catherine:  Catherine Beaumont is a professional English willow basket weaver based in Midhurst who developed a passion for basket making after a weekend workshop in 1996. Using English, and locally sourced willow and coppice materials she loves to create beautiful baskets in traditional and contemporary designs.

After initially learning the basics of basketry in 1996, she was fortunate to meet Jack West, a second generation basketmaker. After the closure in 1971 of Cobbetts, the basket making factory in Guildford, Jack had set up as a self employed basketmaker; he had a keen eye for detail, and masses of knowledge. Jack was always willing to advise her on the projects and orders she received at farmers’ markets, including making panniers for donkeys, an umbrella basket for a vintage car, or a wicker arrow carrier for medieval re-enactments. He taught her traditional methods, and techniques he’d learnt over the years. His advice was invaluable.  He was basketmaking daily until the age of 86, only a few weeks before he died. He was passionate about basketmaking.and Catherine feels privileged to have been able to work and learn from him.

Tickets are £95 each and include all that you need and refreshments. Tickets are available here

Star Gazing Evening

POSTPONED TO SUNDAY 3rd MARCH

Due to poor weather conditions we have had to move this event to Sunday 2nd March - if you were originally booked on the Friday you’re not booked on Sunday. If you’d like to swap to Saturday please email us on hello@findonplace.com. If you’d prefer a refund please email also.

Come and join us at Findon Place to enjoy the fabulous Dark Skies above the Southdowns National Park with enthusiastic astronomers from the Worthing Astronomers Club. Using a selection of portable telescopes you’ll be guided around the cosmos.

Stargazing experiences are ideal for anyone interested in astronomy and getting outside into the great outdoors. It’s good fun exploring the Universe with the help of experienced astronomers, learning to navigate the constellations and observing incredibly distant objects through large telescopes. You’ll gain valuable knowledge and skills from astronomers and learn how to correctly set up a telescope and see stunning celestial objects. View and photograph some of the beautiful sights you see and enjoy this exciting experience together.

We will then use one of our large telescopes to take you out on a journey across the universe. Along the way you’ll be able to view star systems, star clusters, nebulae and galaxies far beyond our own in the telescope, while our astronomer gives you the background story to each view. If the moon and / or planets are visible at the time then we’ll visit them too with the telescope. We’ll be lighting our fire pits and offering a selection of hot drinks, toasting marshmallows over the fire and enjoying the night sky.

Cloud & Rain: In the UK cloud and rain is always a threat to any stargazing event and we will review closer to the date if the event can go ahead or be moved to another date.

Suitability: Our Stargazing Experience Nights are suitable for individuals, couples and families.

CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE UNDER THE AGE OF 16 MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A RESPONSIBLE ADULT
Duration: approximately 2 hours What to bring: Please wrap up warm - gloves, hats and scarves as you will be outside most of the time, blankets too. We won’t have any external lights on so that we reduce light pollution giving us a clearer view of the night skies so you might find a torch helpful.
